The Urals Federal District (UFD) is one of the most economically developed and effectively working territories of the Russian Federation.

The Urals Federal District consists of 6 subjects of the Russian Federation: Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk, Kurgan, Tyumen regions, Khanty-Mansi autonomous region - Yugra, Yamal-Nenets autonomous region. Total area of the UFD is 1788,9 thousand square kilometers (10,6% of area of the Russian Federation). District's administrative center is Yekaterinburg. The population of the UFD is 12 380 thousand people (8,5% of country's population).

By the common level of economic development the Urals Federal District has the first place in the Russian Federation. In absolute magnitudes by the GRP amounts and industrial production, key assets and retail trade turnover,  àáñîëþòíûõ âåëè÷èíàõ ïî îáúåìàì ÂÐÏ è ïðîäóêöèè ïðîìûøëåííîñòè, îñíîâíûì ôîíäàì è îáîðîòó ðîçíè÷íîé òîðãîâëè, capital forming investments and financial inpayments to the budget system of the country the District occupies stably leading positions, staying at the second-third place among all the Federal Districts of the Russian Federation.

In relative numbers the UFD occupies the leading position in the Russian Federation by the most of the key indicators of economical development. The Urals Federal District produces 17& of Russia's gross domestic product. The UFD accounts for more than 18% of all fixed assets of the Russian Federation, 10% of retail trade turnover, 17% of common amount of investment into the basic capital, more than 34% of all financial inpayments to the country's budget system, more than 50% of Russia's exports taking into account exports of hydrocarbons, extracted in the District.

The peculiarities of the UFD that determine its place in economy of the Russian Federation are the unique by reserves and diversity ntural raw resources potential; developed industrial sector with domination of basic, strategical industries: oil and gas extraction and processing, machine building, metallurgy, energy, mining industry, military-industrial complex, timber industry; strong, although uneven developed transport and energy infrastructure; big share of export production; high qualification of human resources; concentration of educational and scientific centers.

The Urals Federal District is a strong industrial center. Major Russian companies producing 45% of fuel industry's production, 42% of metallurgical complex production, about 10% of machine building production work on the territory of the District.

The UFD is the main oil and gas extracting region of the country. 66% of oil, about 91% of natural gas, 65% of associated oil gas and 50% of condensate are extracted on the territory of the District.

The Urals Federal District is one of the richest raw mineral regions of Russia. Subsoil of the UFD have considerable reserve of iron, titan-magnetite and copper ores, non-ferrous, noble and rear metals, peat, asbestos and non-metallic building materials, precious and semi-precious stones. Major timber resources are concentrated here, they make about 10% of all-Russian reserves.

Scientific and technical potential of the Urals Federal District allows ensuring effective solution of the most of the problems of technical modernization of production, increase of the processing level of extracted raw materials, environment at the expense of its own resources.
