OHL ŽS, a.s., joint-stock company, is the successor of the state enterprise Železniční stavitelství Brno. This enterprise was established in 1952 and its mission was to provide construction works to the then Czechoslovak State Railways, i.e. construction, reconstruction and repairs of railway lines and buildings. In 1971, the enterprise was incorporated into the production & economic unit “Railway Construction”, with its seat in Bratislava.
In the middle of 1991, the unit was shut down and after nine months of the independent enterprise operating on its own, Železniční stavitelství Brno, state enterprise, was transformed into a joint-stock company.
The change of the corporate name from ŽS Brno, a.s. to OHL ŽS, a.s. in 2006 confirmed the company’s affiliation to the Spanish multinational construction and investment OHL Group, which OHL ŽS has belonged to since 2003.
The company has 533 shareholders at the moment. A Spanish construction group OHL is the majority owner; it possesses 97,71% of OHL ŽS, a.s. shares, partly directly but mostly through the Czech construction company “ZPSV Ugerski OStrog”, a.s.
